Key Takeaways
The Big 4 Audit Just 17% of Audited Companies
Despite their global dominance, the Big 4 firms collectively audit only 2,475 Swiss companies, or about 17.1% of all audited entities. This is lower than many people expect. The Swiss market has a strong tradition of mid-tier and regional audit firms.
PwC Leads the Big 4
With 1,071 mandates, PwC holds the largest Big 4 share in Switzerland, nearly double EY (662) and more than double KPMG (528). Deloitte trails with 214 mandates, roughly a fifth of PwC's count.
BDO Is the Largest Single Auditor
BDO audits 1,629 companies, making it the single largest auditor in Switzerland by mandate count. It surpasses every individual Big 4 firm and accounts for 11.3% of all audited companies. This reflects BDO's strong positioning in the Swiss SME market.
97% of Companies Have No Auditor
The most striking number: 761,750 companies (97.1% of the registry) have no registered auditor at all. Under Swiss law, small companies can opt out of an audit if they have fewer than 10 full-time employees. The vast majority of Swiss GmbHs and sole proprietorships exercise this option.
The "Other" Category Dominates the Audited Space
Among audited companies, 9,822 (67.9%) are audited by firms outside the Big 4 and major mid-tier networks. This long tail consists of hundreds of cantonal and regional audit firms, many with deep local expertise.
